FAQ’S for the High School Leadership Event.

Why a High School Leadership Event?

In January 2019 The District Youth Ministry Council (DYMC) met with FLGA District high school youth and youth leaders in a one-day summit to explore the possibilities of ministry to the high school youth today.

Outcomes from discussions at the summit focus primarily on:

  • Making regional connections with other youth groups, to include regional gatherings.
  • Leadership Training
  • Service Projects
  • Fun and competition
  • Camp atmosphere is more exciting than hotels

Some of the roadblocks identified were:

  • Expenses and travel
  • Adult Leader Volunteer shortage

To achieve some of those outcomes and overcome some roadblocks, the inaugural High School Leadership Event will take place during the same dates as the Middle School Youth Gathering – November 1-3 at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center.

Will there still be a High School Youth Gathering?

The short answer is no, not in 2020.   But the District is still committed to equipping High School youth to connect others to Jesus.  So the High School Leadership Training Event is specifically designed to enhance the leadership skills of high school age youth who have either demonstrated the ability to provide effective leadership among their peers and others, or exhibit the potential to lead effectively.  The event is limited to 40 participants.

At this point, there are plans to have a High School Servant Event in the summer of 2020.

What about Junior Guides at the MSYG?

Because student leaders will be attending the HSLE, the Junior Guide role at the MSYG will be replaced by adult volunteers and 8th grade students who have been identified by their Adult Leader as a leader.

Will the high school youth be sharing a cabin with their MSYG youth group?

The High School Youth attending the HSLE will be housed in separate cabins from the MSYG attendees.

Will the high school youth be meeting in the same areas as the MSYG?

They will be meeting in an area separate from the MSYG.

Will we need to bring more adult volunteers?

Adult Leaders are already in place for this event. There is no need to bring additional adult leaders, however, if you are only bringing high school youth to this event, please contact Cindy Hammerstrom at chammerstrom@flgadistrict.org to discuss details.

Bring your HSLE attendees to the Middle School Youth Gathering Registration in the Raintree Center at Lake Yale.  They will be shuttled to their North Camp location from there.
